Ruben Amorim responds to Matheus Cunha to Manchester United transfer speculation (2025)

Ruben Amorim refused to be drawn on Manchester United’s transfer interest in Matheus Cunha but claims he has a clear idea of how he is envisaging his club’s summer rebuild.

The Red Devils are destined to finish the season with their lowest ever Premier League points tally following a dismal domestic campaign.

Amorim, who was appointed as Erik ten Hag’s successor in November, can still salvage something from the season with United having scrambled their way into the Europa League semi-finals.

Attention, however, is already quickly turning to the transfer window and United hope to address their chronic lack of goals by securing the services of Wolves’ forward Cunha.

The Brazil international, whose contract includes a £62.5million release, clause is said to be keen on a move to Old Trafford and develope under Amorim’s tutelage.

Asked about United leading the race to sign Cunha ahead of this weekend’s game against Bournemouth, Amorim said: ‘This is a conversation for the end of the week but I have an idea and things can change until the end of the season.’

Pressed on whether United remain attractive to potential signings given their ongoing struggles, he added: ‘It’s Manchester United. There are a lot of players that want to play for our club.

What has Cunha said about leaving Wolves?

While happy to turn down offers and stay at the club in January, Cunha has been vocal about his desire to move on to pastures new in the summer.

‘I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it,’ Cunha toldthe Guardian in March.

‘Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.

‘Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.’

‘If you look at our club in the moment, with all the problems, it looks a little bit of a problem but we have a clear idea and that’s the easiest part to explain for a player.

‘It’s Manchester United and every player wants to play for Manchester United.’

Amorim, meanwhile, has revealed Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot has suffered a potentially-season ending calf injury.

The 26-year-old has made 51 appearances for the Red Devils this season in all competitions, missing just one match through suspension.

Dalot came off the bench in Sunday’s 1-0 loss against Wolves as Amorim looked to manage his minutes with the crucial Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao looming large.

However, the versatile full-back has picked up a muscle injury that threatens to bring his campaign to a premature end.

‘Diogo Dalot is out,’ said Amorim. ‘We don’t know how long he’s going to be out, but he’s out for these games, next games. We’ll see until the end.”

Asked if Dalot could miss the rest of the season, he said: ‘There is that possibility, but I don’t know.

‘We’ll check week by week because he works really hard, he can recover quite well. We will see.

‘He has something in his muscle, in his calf. He had a sequence of games that he played all the time.

‘We tried to manage but some of the players have to play a lot of minutes, and we have to protect the ones that we think that they are not so ready to cope with that but Dalot felt something.’
